Kathmandu, July 31
Floodwaters caused by last night’s heavy rain have blocked several roads along the rivers and streams in Kathmandu, significantly disrupting transportation. Roads in the Kageshwari Manohara area are still submerged, making it challenging to distinguish between roadways and waterways, and many parts of the corridor areas remain muddy.
The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology had previously advised against travelling along riverside roads due to the heavy rainfall and resulting floods in the Kathmandu Valley. Despite this, many drivers and passengers have continued to use these routes, facing severe traffic jams.
Floodwaters have heavily impacted local communities living along the rivers and streams, with significant disruptions to daily life. Key areas affected include the UML Central Office in Chyasal, Shankhapark, squatter settlements, and the Kalimati vegetable market, all of which are submerged.
Authorities continue to urge residents to avoid riverbanks and flooded roads to ensure safety and facilitate rescue and relief operations.
