BP Highway to shut for 10 hours nightly

Kavre, October 17

The Dhulikhel-Bhakundevesi-Barsekhola section of the BP Highway has been closed for 10 hours every night, starting from Wednesday.

The Bhaktapur Division Road Office issued a notice on Wednesday informing the public that the road will be closed from 6:00 pm to 4:00 am for the duration of the repairs that have been damaged due to continuous rainfall, floods, and landslides occurred on October 26, 27 and 28.

Senior Divisional Engineer Suman Yogesh from the Bhaktapur Division Road Office explained that the closure is necessary due to ongoing repair and improvement work on an 8-kilometre stretch of the road in the Kavre district, specifically between 1 Number Bridge and Chaukidanda-Barsekhola. This work aims to make travel smoother and safer.

A temporary track has been constructed in the Chaukidanda-Barsekhola section, which was completely washed away. Currently, it is open only to passenger vehicles. The BP Highway, which serves as a key route connecting Kathmandu with eastern Nepal, was partially reopened in one direction after 14 days of closure, starting from the ninth day of the Dashain festival. The reopening was made possible through the efforts of the Road Department, local municipalities, the Nepal Army, and the police.

Prior to the closure, thousands of vehicles used to pass daily on the BP Highway. After its reopening, heavy traffic was reported due to the large number of passengers returning to Kathmandu following the Dashain festival.

The BP Highway was constructed by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and officially handed over to the Government of Nepal on July 3, 2015.
