Earthquake in Sindhupalchok: Inmate breaks Arm, police post wall cracks, landslide in Bhotekoshi

Kathmandu, February 28

A 6.1-magnitude earthquake centered in Bhairavkund, Sindhupalchok, caused minor damage in the district. As of early morning reports, no significant human casualties or major structural damage have been reported.

According to Sindhupalchok’s Chief District Officer Kiran Thapa, an inmate broke his arm while trying to flee in panic. He is currently receiving treatment at the district hospital.

Similarly, the wall of a police post in Kodari developed cracks. “The wall of the barracks where officers stay has sustained minor cracks,” CDO Thapa stated.

In addition, a landslide has occurred in Dugunagadhi, Ward No. 3 of Bhotekoshi Rural Municipality.

Authorities are still gathering information, and police have directed all local offices to report further updates.

The earthquake struck at 2:51 AM on Friday, with its epicenter in Bhairavkund, Sindhupalchok.

The 2015 Gorkha earthquake, which had its epicenter in Barpak, Gorkha, resulted in over 9,000 deaths and extensive destruction of homes and infrastructure, with Sindhupalchok being the hardest-hit district.

Two injured in Kathmandu amid panic

Two people were injured in Kathmandu while fleeing in panic after the earthquake that struck Sindhupalchok early Friday morning.

Among the injured is 22-year-old Prashant Thiling from Triyuga Municipality-10, Udayapur, currently residing in Shantinagar, Kathmandu. He was injured after hitting a roadside structure while running and is undergoing treatment at the National Trauma Center, according to SP Apilraj Bohora of the Kathmandu Police.

Another injured individual is 26-year-old Hari Gaire from Madhyabindu Municipality-5, Nawalparasi, residing in New Baneshwor. Gaire, who lives in a hostel, sustained injuries while attempting to evacuate during the tremors. He is receiving treatment at Civil Hospital, SP Bohora confirmed.

The earthquake, measuring 6.1 in magnitude, was centered in Bhairavkund, Bhotekoshi Rural Municipality-2, Sindhupalchok, and was felt across the Kathmandu Valley.
