Amidst the nationwide lockdown imposed to control the coronavirus outbreak in the country, hundreds of students in many government schools of Sahid municipality of Dhanusha district gathered at their respective schools, donned in uniforms.
Though the district itself has a few active Covid-19 cases of late, the students looked enthusiastic to visit the schools after weeks. Most of them even did not bother to or could not afford to wear masks.
“Our teacher has called us to collect new books,” Suraj Raya Yadav, a fifth-grader at the Dumariya Basic School in the ward 8 of the municipality said.
His teacher Gohit Man Yadav also confirmed the boy’s answer and said his principal instructed the teachers to distribute the textbooks. On his part, principal Ashok Yadav said he was under the municipality officials’ pressure to open the school notwithstanding the lockdown.
The municipality’s Chief Executive Officer Nanda Kumar Jha said the municipality directed the schools to distribute the textbooks, but by maintaining required safety distance. “We sent the textbooks to the schools so that they could send them to the kids’ houses,” he assured, “I will check what happened.”
