CPN-UML General Secretary Ishwar Pokharel says it will be better if the same person leads the unified communist party as well as the next government.
Pokharel’s statement comes while speculations are rife that UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli and CPN-Maoist Centre Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal have made an agreement that Oli becomes the next prime minister and Dahal the chairman of party formed after the unification between two.
But, in an interview with Onlinekhabar, Pokharel, also a member of the party unification coordination committee, says the single person should lead the government and the party.
“Personally I think the party chairman, parliamentary party leader and prime minister should be a single person. Having different persons at those positions might create multiple centres in the party,” Pokharel says, but maintains, “This is my personal thought and not an official decision. Al these issues will get settled once there is unification.”
Pokharel argues such a system does not create any problem as the two leaders–Oli and Dahal–have already already agreed to unify the parties at the cost of their leadership.
“The unity did not take place for issues like Prachandaji [Dahal] gets what and Oli gets what,” he claims, “Management of leaders is not an issue. After the unification, Prachandaji or anyone can lead the party. We will easily settle it.”
