The CK Raut-led Janamat Party has warned of foiling local elections scheduled for May 13 if the demands raised by the party are not addressed by then.
For over a month recently, the Janamat Party staged protests in various southern districts demanding fertilisers and other facilities for the farmers easily. While some analysts claim the movement is not for the farmers but a search for his presence in the Madhes-centric politics, Raut says he does not want elections to happen before they are addressed.
“First, let the demands of the farmers be addressed so that we can imagine the local elections to take place,” CK Raut said in a press meet in Birgunj on Wednesday, “If not, we will block the process in the southern plains from Jhapa to Kanchanpur although I am not sure about other places.”
If the demands were addressed, Raut said his party would be too desperate to take part in the election process. “We are desperate to participate in the elections, but some initiatives should be taken to address the farmers’ issues before that. We understand this will not be over in one day, but we need to see some efforts being made.”
Meanwhile, CK Raut’s party has postponed street-centric protests for now.
