Kathmandu, February 3
Nepali Congress leader Gagan Thapa said today he will retire from politics when he turns 55. That will be 15 years from now. Thapa told Onlinekhabar he will dedicate himself in the service of the country, adding that he will not strive to become a lawmaker, minister or seek an executive post once he turns 55.
“By the time I turn 55, there will be no dearth of youth leaders in their 40s. We can hand over the party leadership to capable youth leaders.”
Till I turn 55, I will try to shoulder whatever political responsibilities come my way, Thapa said.
“I can become lawmaker three more times if the country’s situation allows me, if I remain active in politics and if my capabilities allow me.”
This two-time lawmaker got elected as central committee member of the NC in the party’s 12th general convention.
“I can become lawmaker three more times if the country’s situation allows me, if I remain active in politics and if my capabilities allow me,” Thapa said. “I can even hold other executive posts. For up to 20 years, I can discharge my duties by becoming a part of the party’s central authority.”
He said: In the next 20 years, I can shoulder my responsibilities by becoming a part of the party’s central body and by becoming lawmaker, apart from shouldering other responsibilities. What more can I ask for.” During these 15 years, Thapa may want to become NC president to Prime Minister. These plans can wait.
His immediate goal, however, is to get elected as an office-bearer of the party at its 13th general convention, which is about a month away. “Setting objectives and getting to work. And making way for the new generation by quitting in the event of failure to achieve the set objectives,” Thapa spelt out his plan thus.
