Kathmandu, November 29

Nepali Congress, a ruling ally of Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal’s Maoist party, has said the Madheshi Morcha needs to own the constitution amendment proposal prepared by the government before it is tabled in Parliament.

The Congress has said unnecessary protests in Province 5 may be triggered if the Morcha does not back the government proposal to amend the constitution to meet the demands of the Madhesh-based parties.

The assessment comes as leaders within the ruling CPN-Maoist Centre become wary of the Morcha and its stance on the amendment. The Morcha has says it cannot comment on the amendment before it is tabled.

A Minister from the Nepali Congress says his party wants to the UML on board any decision to make changes to the constitution. “It is our assessment that a proposal that is bound to fail should not be tabled at all.”

He said as the UML shows no signs of backing the proposal, the government needs to at least secure the backing of the Morcha, for whom the constitution if being amended.
