Historic Nepali film Sindoor to screen

Kathmandu, March 3

In celebration of International Women’s Day, the historic Nepali film Sindoor will be screened after 46 years. The screening is scheduled for Tuesday at 10 AM at the Film Development Board hall.

Organized by the Women Filmmakers Empowerment Committee under the Board, Sindoor was Nepal’s second colour film, released in 1979. Directed by Prakash Thapa, it was the first silver jubilee film in Nepal, running for 52 consecutive weeks in Kathmandu cinemas.

The film starred Gopal Raj Mainali and Basundhara Bhusal, who became famous as “Chankhe” and “Nakkali,” while Nir Shah made his debut as a villain. It also represented Nepal at the Uzbekistan Film Festival and was the first Nepali film to be dubbed domestically. Additionally, it marked Udit Narayan Jha’s debut as a playback singer with the song Hey Nakkali. Choreographer Basanta Shrestha also made his debut in this film.

The movie was screened at Ashok Hall in Patan, Navadurga in Bhaktapur, and Jai Nepal, Bishwojyoti, and Ranjana cinemas in Kathmandu. Film Development Board Chairperson Dinesh DC stated that the film is being screened on this occasion due to its strong theme of women’s empowerment.
