A nationwide survey has found that the Covid-19 pandemic has affected the mental and financial well-being of a majority of journalists in each of the seven provinces in Nepal.
The report of the survey, undertaken by the Nepal Press Institute and Bournemouth University (UK), has been revealed in the presence of Communications Minister Yuba Raj Khatiwada on Wednesday.
In total, 1,134 journalists, from all the seven provinces, had participated in the survey. According to the report, 83 per cent of journalists reported increased vulnerability, 75 per cent increased anxiety and 62 per cent grief. Likewise, 25 per cent per cent of the respondents suffered from depression.
According to the report, 55 per cent of respondents who worked for print outlets reported a reduction in the number of pages published, and 48 per cent respondents reported reduced print frequency. Broadcast and radio news, too, followed the same pattern, with journalists from the sectors reporting reduced news production and dissemination.
