Kathmandu, April 24
Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli paid tributes to about 10,000 people, who died in last year’s mega quakes, on Sunday.
Prime Minister Oli reached Dharahara early in the morning, observed a minute’s silence in memory of the dead and offered flowers to the departed, wishing for peace to the departed souls.
On the occasion, home minister and other government officials, high government officials, tourism entrepreneurs and representatives of different organisations also paid tributes to the deceased.
Around 9,000 people died, thousands became homeless and infrastructure worth trillions of rupees was destroyed when a 7.6-magnitude earthquake rocked Nepal a year ago (Baishakh 12, 2072 or April 25, 2015). A year on, reconstruction and rehabilitation efforts have been snail-paced, and the National Reconstruction Authority has said building permanent shelters for earthquake victims before this year’s rainy season will not be possible. In this context, a minute’s silence on the part of the head of the government, his deputies and high government officials seems to speak a thousand words.
