Chitwan, January 18
Nepal Hatcheries’ Association has brought down the price of chicken eggs. A crate of eggs will now cost Rs 10 less than earlier.
Shiva Ram KC of the association said this is their bid to provide some relief to customers, who have been buying eggs at higher rates.
The price took effect from Tuesday. As per the adjustments, the farm price of large eggs is Rs 345/crate and selling rate is Rs 350.
Farm price of medium-sized eggs is Rs 325/crate whereas the selling price is Rs 330.
Before the adjustment, farm price of large eggs was Rs 355/crate whereas the selling rate was Rs 365. Farm price of medium-sized eggs was Rs 340/crate, whereas the selling price was Rs 350.
About a month ago, egg price reached record high, so the association brought down the prices to provide some relief to customers. KC said: Despite soaring demands, we have not been able to supply eggs to the Hills and the highlands due to cold weather and snowfall.
KC informed that factors like winter vacation in colleges and schools, and the Swasthani ritual — during the ritual, disciples avoid meat, eggs and alcohol — have also brought down the consumption of eggs. He said the idea behind price reduction was to encourage consumption of eggs in production hubs themselves.
He said the association will adjust egg prices depending on the weather and the (demand-supply) situation. Chicken farms in Chitwan produce around nine lakh eggs daily. They supply 90 per cent of the eggs produced in the district to Kathmandu, Pokhara and eastern parts of Nepal.
Shiva Prasad Baral, executive director of the association, said around 1,600 chicken farms based in Nepal produce around 2.5 million eggs daily.
