Kathmandu, February 6
The Election Commission has accused the government of trying to impose restrictions on administrative and financial autonomy the Commission has been enjoying.
The constitutional body says three amendments the government proposed to the Election Commission Act limit rights of the Commission.
The government has recently registered a bill to amend various laws in Parliament, according to which the Election Commission Act will also be amended.
Speaking at a meeting of the Law, Justice and Human Rights Committee of Parliament on Wednesday, Chief Election Commissioner Ayodhee Prasad Yadav said the proposed amendment that the constitutional body should receive a consent of the Ministry of Finance to hold the government responsible for the Commission’s expenses contradicted the constitution.
He also objected to proposed provisions that the election-related expenses should be in compliance with the Public Procurement Act and the government’s approval was needed to recruit staff on contract.
