Kathmandu, June 12
In a landmark verdict, the Kathmandu District Court has handed down seven years in jail to former district judge Bhuwan Giri on the charge of marital rape. The court has also ordered Giri to provide Rs 300,000 in compensation to the victim.
A bench of Judge Durga Bhusal ordered the verdict on Tuesday sentencing seven years in jail to Giri.
Earlier in a verdict on May 26, the court had convicted Giri in the rape case. The punishment and compensation to the victim were announced on Tuesday.
Judge Giri was sent to custody after his suspension from the job following the registration of a complaint against him when serving as the District Judge in Kapilvastu district court.
