Kathmandu, April 25
Coinciding with the anniversary of the Gorkha earthquake, which killed around 9,000 people, rendered thousands homeless and destroyed infrastructure worth trillions of rupees in Nepal exactly a year ago, National Reconstruction Authority has made public a partial list of people eligible for grants meant for reconstruction of their quake-ravaged houses. NRA says it will update the list after gathering more information about quake damages.
The list includes 3,00, 961 houseowners from 383 village development committees in 11 districts. According to the NRA, these are the people whose houses were completely destroyed in the earthquake.
Ram Prasad Thapaliya, spokesperson for the NRA, said they have forwarded this list to district development committees concerned through the central project implementation unit of the Ministry of Federal Affairs and Local Development. As per the list, 15,500 houseowners are eligible for grant in Okhaldhunga, 21,114 in Sindhuli, 30, 519 in Ramechhap, 49,751 in Dolakha, 35, 308 in Sindhupalchok, 40, 264 in Kavrepalanchok, 38, 235 in Nuwakot, 5,417 in Rasuwa, 23, 440 in Dhading, 7, 412 in Makwanpur and 34, 496 in Gorkha.
The quakes that rocked the country on April 25, 2015 and May 12, 2015 as well as aftershocks had destroyed around eight lakh houses. The government will give these house owners two lakh rupees in three phases — Rs 50,000, Rs 80,000 and Rs 70,000 — based on grant agreements.
