Kathmandu, February 20
The Prachanda government has decided to change the boundaries of local levels and increase their number. It has also decided to push the Constitution amendment process at Tuesday’s meeting of the Parliament.
Restructuring tips ‘just’
Monday’s Cabinet meeting accepted the study report that a committee formed under Local Development Minister Hit Raj Pandey had prepared and submitted. It has given the Pandey panel a week to finalise the Local Level Restructuring report after holding consultations with experts.
Government spokesperson Ram Karki said: The government has regarded the panel’s suggestion on adjustment of boundaries in Tarai-Madhesh and other places as just and appropriate.
Citing dissatisfaction over the restructuring report, the government had formed a study committee comprising three ministers. The committee has already submitted its report, calling for an increase in the number of local levels in Tarai-Madhesh.
Project Amendment
The government has decided to push forth the Constitution amendment process through Tuesday’s Parliament meeting. The government plans to announce local elections on Monday evening and push forth the amendment process from Tuesday.
Karki said the government will push the Constitution amendment process ahead now.
The government has already registered a Constitution Amendment Bill in the Parliament, seeking changes in Province 5 boundaries. But the process has not moved ahead due to protests from opposition parties, including the main oppoosition CPN-UML.
At the same time, the government has also decided to expedite works related to the Federal Commission. Despite a decision to form such a commission, the government is yet to appoint members.
