Kanchanpur incident: India should apologise, says govt spokesperson

Kathmandu, March 17

Minister for Information and Communications Ram Karki says India should apoligise for the death of a Nepali national at the hands of the SSB in Nepal’s Kanchanpur last week.

Karki, who is also the official government spokesperson, said the Nepali government has already sent a forensics report to India, and New Delhi should accept that an innocent life was lost in the incident.

Govinda Gautam of Ananda Bazaar, Punarbas Municipality-8 in Kanchanpur district, was killed when India’s Seema Sashastra Bal (SSB) opened fire on locals at the Nepal-India border on Thursday last week during a row over the construction of a culvert at the border.

Karki also said that the government was committed to conducting civic elections on the pre-scheduled date. He added that the government wants to get the Madhesi Morcha on board to conduct the elections. Polls will not be postponed even if there is resistance in some parts of the Madhesh, he added.
