Kathmandu, November 24
Human casualties resulting from traffic accidents have decreased by nearly 38 per cent in the Kathmandu valley recently, the Metropolitan Traffic Police Division (MTPD) says.
The MTPD states that 254 people had died and 241 had sustained injuries in traffic accidents in the fiscal year 2018/19 whereas 152 people died and 85 were injured in traffic accidents in the fiscal year 2019/20.
The Division says 50 people have died in traffic mishaps so far in the current fiscal year 2020/21.
It is stated that 10,000 vehicles got involved in accidents in the previous fiscal year while 2,600 vehicles got into accidents till now in the current fiscal year.
The division attributes the decline in traffic accidents to various programmes, including road safety programmes. Similarly, a less number of vehicles on the road due to the Covid-19 has also contributed to lessening the traffic accidents.
The MTPD states in a press note it issued on Monday that new plans have been implemented through continuous coordination with the stakeholders to reduce traffic accidents and to make the traffic management effective. It mentions the use of technology, intensified action against over-speed and reckless driving and other traffic offences, and determination of the time for operating tippers have helped reduce the accidents.
According to the MTPD, action has been taken against 442,466 vehicles and revenue Rs 287 million 177,000 has been collected as fine against these vehicles.
Similarly, 8,704 taxi drivers have faced action for cheating passengers under what is called the ‘sweep operation’ conducted by the traffic police during this period.
