CPN-UML senior leader and former prime minister Madhav Kumar Nepal says a communist party should adopt collective, not individual, leadership model.
Commenting on his party’s General Secretary Ishwar Pokharel’s comment that a single person should lead the party, the parliamentary party and the government so as to avoid the existence of multiple sectors, Nepal, in an interview with Onlinekhabar, says the individual leadership is against principles of communism.
“Individual leadership is a wrong system. A communist party should adopt collective leadership as Marxist and Leninist principles say so. However, we need to discuss and decide who should lead.”
Likewise, he says Pokharel’s statement contradicts a previous agreement made with the CPN-Maoist Centre for the party unity.
“I call everyone to be consistent with their logic. We should not change our statements to suit our benefits.”
He says the party leaders should keep their promises so as to take Maoist leaders into confidence for party unification. “We have a great responsibility to unify the parties,” he says, “Else, our party cadres will stand against those who work against party unification. General people will also go against them.”
Meanwhile, Nepal demanded the party unification coordination committee hold a meeting immediately to decide who lead the government and how other leaders be managed.
In another context, the former prime minister says he does not have any ambition for any leadership position, except to work for consolidating the party organisation and fulfilling promises made in the election manifesto.
