Kathmandu, May 4
UCPN-Maoist General Secretary Krishna Bahadur Mahara has said conspiracies are afoot to jail the party chairman and its rank and file over conflict-era cases.
Mahara, who was speaking in Parliament on Wednesday, asked, “Why is the Oli government trying to send us to jail?”
He also objected to the government’s move to re-open files related to crimes committed during the insurgency. “There are many who are saying that leaders (Maoists) should be sent to jail. Statements likes these will not help the country move forward.”
Maharas’ statement comes a few hours after his party formally decided to field Chairman Prachanda as its candidate for Prime Minister alleging that the government failed to conclude the peace process. Mahara said that although the government’s stand on nationalism was praise-worthy, it could not meet the people’s expectations.
