Melamchi pipe burst causes damage in Thapathali, Road Cleared (Photo Feature)

melamchi pipe burst

A burst in the Melamchi water supply pipe early this morning in the Thapathali area caused significant disruptions, leading to road damage, flooding of nearby shops, and obstruction of traffic. The incident occurred at the turning point from Thapathali Chowk towards Norvic Hospital.

The forceful outflow of water caused the road to collapse, scattering mud and stones across the area, while nearby restaurants, pharmacies, and fruit shops were inundated. The sudden flooding also created difficulties for pedestrians and vehicles.

Authorities swiftly responded to the situation, and clean-up efforts have now been completed. Water that had entered roads and commercial establishments has been drained, and a dozer was used to remove the accumulated stones and gravel. With this, the previously blocked road has been reopened for operation.

This is not the first such incident in Kathmandu. On February 12, another Melamchi pipeline burst along the Bijulibazar-Babarmahal road section, submerging government offices, including the  Department of Forest and Soil Conservation.

The recurring pipeline failures have raised concerns about the durability of the infrastructure and its impact on urban life.
