Bhaktapur, December 21

Minister for Law Ajaya Shankar Nayak said on Wednesday that conducting local elections is the only alternative that can address the demands of the CPN-UML and Madheshi parties.

Nayak, speaking at a face-to-face that Rafat Sanchar Club had organised, said local elections are the first and foremost priority of the country. Therefore, Madheshi Morcha and the UML should give up their respective stances and help the government announce the date for local elections, Nayak added.

He said: All parties are now talking about local elections. But whether it’s in the Parliament or the parliamentary committee concerned, the Election Bill is pending. Opposition parties are saying one thing and doing exactly the opposite.

The country will suffer a huge loss if we fail to head towards elections on schedule by ensuring the passage of the Election Bill through the House, Nayak warned.

He said: Major political parties should come together, form a consensus government and find a way out of the political standoff.

Rather than playing the role of a conventional opposition party, the CPN-UML should act as a national party and take initiatives for ending the political standoff.

Rather than playing the role of a conventional opposition party, the CPN-UML should act as a national party and take initiatives for ending the political standoff, Nayak advised.

The minister pointed that the main opposition CPN-UML is talking of nationalism, adding that this talk is irrelevant.

He accused the party of showing double standards.

Nayak alleged: The UML expands its organisational base using foreign money, but talks about nationalism. Is this not unbecoming of a party?
