Mahottari, March 2
The month-long fasting (Roja) of the Muslim community begins today. This rigorous fast, observed with established rituals, is a significant event for Muslims worldwide.
The start of Ramadan is determined by the Hijri (lunar) calendar. According to tradition, Saturday marked the end of the month of “Shaban,” and today begins Ramadan, the ninth month of the Hijri calendar, which is observed with fasting. Muslim religious leaders announced the commencement of Ramadan today, in line with the community’s time-honoured tradition.
Ramadan is considered one of the most sacred months in Islam, as it is believed that the Quran, the holy scripture of Islam, was revealed during this month. Fasting during Ramadan is seen as a highly meritorious act in Islamic teachings.
All Muslims, except for children, the elderly, and the sick, are expected to observe the fast. Fasting involves refraining from eating, drinking, and engaging in marital relations from dawn to sunset. The end of Ramadan is marked by the celebration of Eid-ul-Fitr, one of the most important festivals in the Muslim community.
