Kathmandu, October 1
Nepali Congress General Secretary Shashanka Koirala has demanded that the government launch an independent and fair enquiry into allegations of sexual misconduct levelled against Speaker Krishna Bahadur Mahara.
Koirala said that the allegations against Mahara were heinous and they should be investigated thoroughly. Speaking at a programme in the capital on Tuesday, Koirala, added that the government should make sure that no one interferes in the investigations.
Koirala’s comment comes as Speaker Mahara, whose membership of the Nepal Communist Party was suspended because he assumed the constitutional post, was accused of sexual misconduct by an employee of the parliament secretariat. Mahara denies the allegations and has already resigned from the post to facilitate investigations into the allegations.
