Kathmandu, December 16
Nepali Congress leader Ram Sharan Mahat said on Friday that the government should conduct local elections by putting the Constitution amendment proposal on hold.
At the same time, Mahat said the main opposition CPN-UML was making a mistake by obstructing the Parliament.
It is wrong on the part of the main opposition to bar the House from discussing the amendment proposal.
The Congress leader, speaking at a face-to-face that Reporters’ Club Nepal had organised, said: It is wrong on the part of the main opposition (CPN-UML) to bar the House from discussing the amendment proposal.
It will not be appropriate to withdraw the amendment proposal, Mahat claimed, calling the government to put the amendment proposal on hold, introduce necessary laws and announce the date for elections.

He said the government should hold local elections by keeping existing structures intact, adding: It’s okay even if it (holding elections) takes time. There’s a need to involve experts in this exercise.
Contrary to what the UML has said, the government should not conduct elections for the Parliament first, Mahat said. “We still have about a year (Magh 7, 2074) for conducting three-tier elections.”
