Kathmandu, April 13
The government of Nepal fears the daily Covid-19 case count in Nepal might reach as many as 11,000 by mid-June.
Speaking with journalists in Kathmandu on Tuesday, Health Minister Hridayesh Tripathi says the number of active cases might be around 600,000 by then.
“Let’s wish it would not happen,” Tripathi said, “But, this projection is based on the existing trend.”
Nonetheless, the government is preparing to face the situation, he maintained.
Meanwhile, the minister said the new variant of the coronavirus had attacked youth and children more than adults, and it was more worrisome.
Tripathi informed the ministry had recommended closing all schools in the Kathmandu valley for at least one month to break the chain of the infection.
Saying the government directed all hospitals in the Kathmandu valley to stay ready for the possible crisis, he said efforts were underway to avoid another round of lockdown in the country.
