Nepal Telecom withdraws from Dharahara reconstruction

Proposed design of Dharahara

Kathmandu, September 21

Nepal Telecom says it will not reconstruct the historic Dharahara tower which collapsed in the 2015 earthquake, citing the government failed to assure security to its investment.

The company, however, says it will donate Rs 1 billion to the government for the project as it had committed earlier.

The Nepal Reconstruction Authority has already been informed about the decision, says the telecommunication service provider.

Earlier, the government had designed the model for Dharahara and estimated that the project would cost Rs 4 billion.

But, the government plan has been pushed into limbo after the Telecom pulled out of the project.

It has been learned that the company decided not to take the responsibility as the government did not agree on its proposal to construct a commercial shopping complete on the premises. It has assured that it was ready to invest as much as Rs 7 billion if the government accepted its proposal.

However, the government side insisted that the premises should be left open.
