Kathmandu, March 25
Nepali researchers claim they have made a stronger presence of the country in the Global Injury Prevention Showcase being held virtually this week.
As a preparation for the 14th World Conference on Injury Prevention and Safety Promotion, the event #IPShowcase21 is taking place from Monday to Friday this week. The World Health Organisation and various international organisations working in the field of injury prevention host the conference every two years.
On Wednesday, Nepal’s injury prevention researcher Puspa Raj Pant, currently associated with the University of the West of England, delivered a keynote speech on the importance of quality data in formulating injury prevention policies and programmes, and the use of data from the Global Burden of Disease reports. This is the first time in the history of the last 14 editions of world injury prevention conferences that a Nepali got a chance to be a keynote speaker, Pant claims.
Besides, 10 Nepali researchers presented 20 research papers in total, it has been learned. Pant and his colleagues at the university had presented two papers about Nepal.
Likewise, another Nepali researcher Bhagabati Sedain Silwal of the Tribhuvan University presented two papers on the burden of suicide in Nepal and the economic and social impacts of road traffic injuries on Tuesday.
Santosh Paudel, the director of the National Trauma Centre, and Sunil Kumar Joshi of the Nepal Injury Research Centre also presented their papers.
