Nepali students in US contributed $302 million to local economy: Report

Nepali students pursuing their studies in the United States contributed around $302 million (Rs 30 billion) to the US economy in 2015, a government report shows.

The ‘Open Doors’ report prepared by the Institute of International Education, also says a total of 9,662 Nepali students were in the United States in 2015. The number is 18.4 per cent more than that in the previous year when 8,158 Nepalis were studying in the US.

“Last year, Nepalese students in U.S. colleges and universities contributed $302 million to the U.S. economy. (Estimate calculated by IIE based on information from Open Doors and the U.S. Department of Commerce), says the recently released report.

It says that in the 2015/16 academic year, Nepal was the 17th leading place of origin for students coming to the United States.

Majority of Nepali students in the US study at the undergraduate and graduate level. In 2015/16, their breakdown was as follows: 45.5% undergraduate; 39.6% graduate students; 1.7% other; 13.2% Optional Practical Training.
