No reduction in the number of constituencies in Kathmandu Valley

Kathmandu, August 28

Kathmandu Valley is likely to have 15 constituencies for federal House of Representatives elections as the Constituency Delineation Commission is preparing to submit its report to the government within a couple of days.

The valley had as many constituencies in the first and second Constituent Assembly elections in 2008 and 2013 respectively, including two in Bhaktapur, three in Lalitpur and 10 in Kathmandu.

Though the total number of constituencies across the country is coming down to 165 from existing 240, there will not be reduction in Kathmandu Valley owing to increased population, according to a source privy to final-round discussions in the Commission.

Kathmandu will be the district with the highest number of constituencies followed by Morang, which is likely to have six units.

The source says all Terai districts except Bardiya will have more than two constituencies whereas most districts of mountainous region will have only one constituency each.

It is expected that the Commission will submit its report to the government on Tuesday. However, spokesperson Bagendra Raj Paudel says the time has not been fixed as the Commission is drawing maps of the constituencies.

The number of constituencies for provincial assemblies will be double the nunmber of constituencies for federal elections as the constitution says there will be 165 constituencies in federal and exactly double (330) in provincial polls.
