Kathmandu, May 28
There is only one woman among 32 newly elected ward chairpersons in the Kathmandu Metropolitan City.
She is Shova Sapkota of ward number 14.
Sapkota of the CPN-UML won the elections by receiving 3,807 votes, around 1,000 more than her closest rival from the Nepali Congress, in her ward.
Sapkota’s panel had swept all positions in her ward as Rashmi Khadka, Urmila Senchuri, Binod Thapa and Basanta Maharjan have become elected ward members.
Sapkota is the district committee member of the party.
There was no any woman ward chair in the KMC in the 1997 local elections. In 1949, however, Sabita Bhattarai of the CPN-UML had won the position in KMC-35 when the sole metropolis of the time had 35 wards.
