OnePlus has officially launched its first foldable smartphone the OnePlus Open. Given the prevailing trend in the smartphone industry towards foldable and flip designs, numerous brands are actively vying for dominance in this category.
OnePlus Open is an intriguing addition to this year’s lineup, following the launches of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5, Google Pixel Fold, Xiaomi Mix Fold 3, and Tecno Phantom V Fold.
Despite being OnePlus’s first foldable smartphone, it boasts a multitude of features, including impressive camera capabilities, a robust hinge mechanism, and high-quality display performance.

Design and Display
The OnePlus Open has a unique design. It shares the same design language as the flagship series of this year the OnePlus 11. The back of the foldable has a huge circular camera module which consists of the triple-camera setup. The triple camera setup is triangular and is on the left side of the circle. On the right side, there is a prominent capital “H” marking, signifying the collaboration with Hasselblad. Interestingly, the flash is not integrated within the camera module; instead, it is positioned in the top left corner.
It is available in two colour options; Emerald Dusk and Voyager Black. The Emerald Dusk colour option has a glass back with a matte finish which has a thickness of 11.7mm when closed. The Voyager Black option has a vegan leather finish which feels very premium and has a thickness of 11.9mm when opened. The frame is made up of aluminium which has a shiny finish.
The hinge on the OnePlus Open is one of the best available in foldable smartphones. It has a zero friction gapless design which helps keep dust and other particles out protecting the inner main screen. The hinge is very rigid and can make the smartphone stand at various angles when opened. It also has a snap when open or closed.
The hinge is made up of titanium alloy, carbon fibre and cobalt molybdenum alloy. OnePlus says that it has certified folds of up to 1,000,000 folds. The hinge leaves a minimal crease which cannot be seen at a glance.
The OnePlus Open has an alert slider like the older models of OnePlus. On the display side, the cover screen has curved edges and a centred hole-punch camera cutout. The main screen when opened has a hole-punch cutout on the top left side of the screen. The cover display is not narrow like other foldable smartphones. The overall thickness is not that much so when folded the smartphone feels like other smartphones.
The OnePlus Open display is also really good. The main display when unfolded makes it a mini table which measures 7.82 inches. It has a resolution of 2,440 x 2,268 pixels, which is also called a 2K display, with 426 ppi pixel density.
It has a wider aspect ratio of 1.0758:1 and a dynamic refresh rate of 1 to 120 Hz. The display technology used is called Flexi-fluid AMOLED with LTPO 3.0. It can reach a typical brightness of 1,400 nits and a maximum brightness of 2,800 nits which can be useful in bright-lit outdoor conditions. It supports various colour profiles like sRGB and DCI-P3 and 10-bit colour depth. It also has a touch response of up to 240 Hz.
The cover screen of the OnePlus Open measures 6.31 inches, which is roughly in line with the standard size of regular smartphones, as opposed to the narrower form factor seen in other foldable devices.
It has a resolution of 2,484 x 1,116 pixels, which is also a 2K, with a pixel density of 431 ppi. It also has a dynamic refresh rate from 10 to 120 Hz and uses Super Fluid AMOLED with LTPO 3.0 technology. It has a typical brightness of 1,400 nits and can peak at 2,800 nits.
The OnePlus Open’s display has a lot of features like nature tone display, eye comfort, image sharpener, video colour enhancer, screen colour mode, colour personalization, colour vision enhancement, auto-brightness, manual brightness, screen colour temperature, bright HDR video mode, night mode and multi-brightness colour calibration. It also has IPX4 splash resistance. It could have been better if it had both dust and water resistance.
Performance and Storage
The OnePlus Open is powered by the flagship Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 Mobile Platform. Its octa-core CPU configuration has one Cortex-X3 core clocked at 3.2 GHz, two Cortex-A715 cores at 2.8 GHz, two Cortex-A710 cores at 2.8 GHz, and three Cortex-A510 cores at 2.0 GHz. The Adreno 740 GPU handles graphics performance for gaming, multitasking and multimedia applications. It runs on Android 13 with OxygenOS 13.2 operating system.
It is available in one RAM option of 16 GB. It also has a virtual RAM feature which allows users to add up to 12 GB of virtual RAM which increases the RAM up to 28 GB.
For cooling the OnePlus Open uses cross-channel thermal conductivity. It has a sheet of ultra-conductive graphene which spreads the heat. For example, if one side of the phone is heated then the graphene sheet transfers the heat to the other side for proper heat distribution.
OnePlus has also up the software experience on the OnePlus Open. It is also set to get 4 years of OS upgrades. The software experience is enhanced with new features such as a dual split screen with fast focus and up to 3 windows for multitasking.
It has an app drawer on the main screen which can be customised accordingly. It also has a recent files tab which can be handy during multi-tasking. The drag and drop function is also there which can be used to share files and photos directly to the apps.
Camera
The OnePlus Open’s camera is also very good. On the back, it has a triple camera setup which features a 48 MP Sony LYT-T808 “Pixel Stacked” CMOS sensor with a 1/1.43″ sensor size and ƒ/1.7 aperture. The 7P lens and optical image stabilisation help in stable shots, and also has 2X optical zoom with a 47mm equivalent focal length.
The telephoto lens is a 64MP OmniVision sensor, offering 3X optical zoom and a 6X in-sensor zoom. It has an f/2.6 aperture and can even zoom in digitally up to 120X. However, the 120X digital zoom pictures are not that detailed for human subjects but for patterns and objects, it can do some post-processing for somewhat detailed images. It also includes a 48MP Sony IMX581 ultra-wide sensor with a wide 114° field of view for ultra-wide shots.
On the video front, the rear camera supports 4K video at 30/60 fps, 1,080p video at 30/60 fps and 720p video at 30/60 fps. It also supports Dolby Vision® HDR at 4K/30 fps and 1080p/30 fps. Other video resolutions include Ultra Steady video at 1,080p/60 fps, Pro Mode at 4K/30 fps, Slo-mo video at 1,080p at 240/480 fps; 720p at 240/480 fps, Time-lapse at 4K/30 fps and Dual-view video at 1080p/30 fps. The rear camera also supports digital zoom of up to 20X.
As for features, the rear camera has a lot of them such as Hasselblad camera for mobile, nightscape, Dolby Vision®, smart scene recognition, portrait mode, Pro mode, Panorama, Tilt-Shift mode, long exposure, Dual-View video, retouch, movie mode, XPan mode, focus peaking, Raw file, Raw Plus file, filters, super stable, video nightscape, video HDR, focus lock, Time-lapse and Google Lens.
For selfies and videos, the OnePlus Open has two selfie cameras; one on the cover display and the other on the main display. On the main display, it has a 20MP front camera with a 1/4″ sensor size and a pixel size of 0.7 µm.
The cover screen has a 32MP front camera with a 1/3.14″ sensor size. It also features a 5P lens with a pixel size of 0.7 µm and electronic image stabilisation. For video, it can record 4K videos at 30fps, 1,080p videos at 30fps and 720p videos at 30fps. For features, it includes face unlock, nightscape selfie, selfie HDR, Time-lapse, Dual-view video and Screen flash.
Battery and Others
The OnePlus Open foldable smartphone is equipped with a 4,805 mAh battery which is a dual-cell battery, made up of two parts: one with 3,295 mAh capacity and another with 1,510 mAh. This battery is non-removable and can last about a day or about 6-7 hours in continuous use which is pretty good for a foldable.
For charging, it is compatible with the wired 67W SUPERVOOC charger. However, you receive an 80W charging brick in the box. The 67W fast charging can charge the foldable from 0-100 per cent in about 42 minutes.
In terms of connectivity, the OnePlus Open supports the latest Wi-Fi standards, including Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac/6e/7 and Bluetooth 5.3 for wireless connections. As for SIM cards, it accommodates two nano-SIM cards. When it comes to audio, the OnePlus Open comes with stereo speakers that support noise cancellation and Dolby Atmos® which further enhances the audio quality.
The OnePlus Open is equipped with various sensors, including a side-mounted fingerprint sensor, accelerometer, electronic compass, gyroscope, ambient light sensor, proximity sensor, sensor core, flick-detect sensor, and infrared sensor.
It is available in two colours; Emerald Dusk and Voyager Black.
As for pricing the OnePlus Open can be expected around Rs 244,000 for the available 16/512GB option.
Verdict
The OnePlus Open is a good foldable smartphone. As the first generation of foldable smartphone OnePlus surely has done a really good job. There are a few flaws that OnePlus can improve in the second generation of the foldable such as the water and dust resistance.
The OnePlus Open boasts a slim profile, which is a positive feature. However, its slimness comes at the expense of a lack of wireless charging capability. While the software experience is generally excellent, there are occasional instances of lag.
The base configuration with 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage aligns well with OnePlus’ understanding that a foldable device requires substantial processing power. Nevertheless, it would be advantageous to offer at least one more storage option, such as a base model with 256 GB, which is a common choice in the flagship category.
Even though there is a lot to improve, the battery, camera and display are some of the key features of the OnePlus Open. It offers great value for money in terms of specs and features.
