Kathmandu, January 25
Minister for Education Giri Raj Mani Pokharel has requested Dr Govinda KC not to go for a hunger strike as implementation of agreements related to health education is already underway.
Medical Education Commission has already taken shape and it will address Dr KC’s demands, Minister Poharel said.
Dr KC has been threatening to launch an agitation pointing that the government is making preparations to turn Manmohan Medical College, which a cooperative (Mahamohan Cooperatives) founded with the motive of earning profit, into a health science institute.
A Bill meant to turn the medical college into an institute of health sciences is already in the Parliament. Dr KC is against turning the college into an institute.
Minister Pokharel said he cannot comment on the Bill as it is already in the Parliament.
Nonetheless, it’s time we considered whether or not to allow founding of profit-oriented institutions in the name of renowned personalities.
Pokharel’s request to Dr KC comes at a time when the country has been reeling under a shortage of essentials like medical supplies resulting from the Indian blockade and the Madhesh movement.
