Prachanda’s U-turn? Nepali Congress, UML think so; Oli heaves a sigh of relief

In a dramatic turn of events in Nepal’s capital, the principal opposition party, Nepali Congress, which was in a bid to topple the KP Oli government, seems to have received a huge setback.

The party, which was preparing to present a no-confidence motion against Oli, now believes that Prachanda, leader of one of the key parties in the ruling alliance, has reneged on his promise to help the Nepali Congress topple the government.

According to sources, NC leaders, who went to meet Prachanda at his residence in Baluwatar, returned, saying, “Prachanda has betrayed us.”

Bimalendra Nidhi, a member of the Deuba-led delegation that met Prachanda on Thursday morning, was heard saying over the phone, “Prachanda has betrayed us.”

Sources say Prachanda and Oli have reached a secret pact to keep the ruling alliance intact. They say Oli has promised Prachanda that the ruling alliance will work together until local elections.

The two parties are likely to sign an agreement to this effect on Thursday itself.
