Kathmandu, December 4
Bishnu Prasad Poudel, undersecretary-general of the main opposition CPN-UML, said on Sunday that the Prachanda government should withdraw the Constitution Amendment Bill from the Parliament to prolong its life and end the current political crisis.
Poudel, speaking at a face-to-face at the Reporters’ Club, accused Prime Minister Prachanda of forgetting the oath of office that he had taken.
While taking the oath, Prachanda had pledged to implement the Constitution and protect it, Poudel noted, adding: But after becoming PM, Prachanda started making efforts to amend the Constitution. The Charter reflects Nepali peoples’ seven-decade-long aspirations. No party will gain by putting the Constitution in jeopardy.
PM Prachanda himself has brought forth a Constitution amendment proposal, he said, claiming that people will not forgive him for his move. (The Parliament) will reject this proposal if it is put to vote and this will spark a conflict in the country, he said.
The government has brought forth this proposal despite objection from a majority of lawmakers, Poudel said, adding: This means this government has failed already. Government should have started implementation of the Charter instead of trying to redraw provincial boundaries.
In Butwal, lakhs of people have hit the streets seeking undivided Province 5. If this government is of the people, it should take back the amendment proposal and make efforts to resolve the crisis.

Conducting local elections is more important than Charter amendment for now, Poudel said, calling the government to withdraw the proposal and start making preparations for elections.
