The Prachanda-led ruling coalition on Monday decided not to table the Constitution Amendment Bill in the Parliament forcefully, for now.
Before Monday’s Parliament meeting, top leaders of the three major parties — the Nepali Congress, CPN-UML and the CPN-Maoist Centre — had ‘positive’ talks at Prime Minister’s Office. But the parties failed to reach a deal as they refused to give up their respective stances.
The silver lining in the dark cloud was the parties’ understanding to keep trying for a deal.
Earlier, the ruling Congress and the Centre were preparing to table the Bill in the Parliament. But a top leader said they will not table the Bill forcefully for now as positive talks with the main opposition CPN-UML are going on.
After the meeting, Centre’s leader Narayan Kaji Shrestha ‘Prakash’ said: We want to avert a conflict with the opposition, we want the decision-making process to move ahead on the basis of an understanding.
‘The ruling coalition has decided not to table the Constitution Amendment Bill in the House for now. This is because talks with the main opposition UML are heading in a positive direction’
