(Updated) Dor Mani Poudel to be appointed Chief Minister of Province 3

Dor Mani Poudel has been elected the parliamentary party leader of CPN-UML in Province 3. As the party holds a majority in the Provincial Assembly, he will be appointed Chief Minister of the Province now.

In an election held today, Poudel defeated Asht Laxmi Shakya, the central Vice-Chairperson of the party, by 10 votes. Poudel received 34 votes from 58 lawmakers.

Kathmandu, February 9

The CPN-UML, which holds a majority in Province 3 Assembly, is electing its parliamentary party leader today. The winner of the election will be appointed the Chief Minister of the Province.

The party’s  central Vice-Chairperson Ashta Laxmi Shakya and the senior-most member of the Assembly Dor Mani Poudel have filed their nominations for the poll, according to the election committee. The voting will be held from 12 pm to 1 pm today.

Shakya is close to the party’s senior leader Madhav Kumar Nepal whereas Poudel belongs to party Chairman KP Sharma Oli’s faction. However, Shakya had met Oli this morning and the Chairman has extended best wishes to her for the victory, according to a source.

Earlier, the party’s politburo member Rajendra Pandey had announced his candidacy, but he later extended support to Shakya.
