Kathmandu, December 18

Speaker Onsari Gharti has called a meeting of three major parties — Nepali Congress, CPN-UML and CPN-Maoist Centre — at 11 am on Monday, as part of her efforts to end obstructions in the Parliament.

The call comes at a time when the main opposition CPN-UML has been obstructing the Parliament against the government-sponsored Constitution Amendment Bill. Due to UML’s obstructions, the Bill has not been included in the Parliament’s businesses.

Speaker Gharti’s press adviser Babin Sharma told Onlinekhabar that the meeting will take initiatives for ending the obstructions in the House, pointing that the obstructions should not continue for long.

Gharti’s earlier initiatives to end the standoff have failed because of different parties’ irreconcilable stances.

At Monday’s Parliament meeting, the Prachanda-led government plans to include the Constitution Amendment Bill as its business. The government had planned to include the amendment proposal on the list of the House’s businesses at its meeting slated for December 15. But the Parliament postponed the meeting for five days in a bid to reach an understanding with concerned parties.

During the five days, however, parties had no discussion on the issue.
