Kathmandu, March 25

Nepal Police, in coordination with Nepali embassies, manpower agencies and Non-Resident Nepalis’ Association, has rescued in course of about 1.5 months 58 Nepali workers stranded abroad.

A hotline service that Nepal Police set up about 1.5 months ago has been instrumental in the rescue of the workers at high risk. Police rescued these people on the basis of complaints they received through the hotline. They are yet to rescue and bring home another 305 workers, who have sent SOS through the hotline service.

Mukunda Marasini, deputy superintendent of police at the Metropolitan Police Crime Division, said they have brought home the migrant workers, who were at high risk and in need of immediate rescue.

The MPCD has set up two hotlines — 4269741 for contact from abroad and 1177 for contact from within Nepal — in the wake of increasing complaints from migrant workers. Workers often complain that foreign employment agents have cheated them or they have been stranded abroad.

And the distress calls have been increasing. The MPCD has received 41 written complaints and grievances. MPCD has deployed two police officers for handling the hotline round the clock.

According to DSP Marasini, police rescue the stranded workers with help from the Nepali Embassy concerned, Non-Resident Nepalis’ Association and the manpower agency that sent the worker abroad.
