Kathmandu, October 23

Different student unions are staging a demonstration on Sunday in a bid to make political parties pass the impeachment motion against suspended CIAA Chief Commissioner Lokman Singh Karki.

While lawmakers present the motion against Karki in the Parliament, student activists will stage a rally supporting action against Karki from Maitighar Mandala to New Baneshwor.

Surendra Basnet, spokesperson for ANNNISU-R, said their protest is meant to press lawmakers from different political parties to stand in favour of impeachment without any fear. Thirteen student unions affiliated to the Nepali Congress, CPN-UML and the CPN-Maoist Centre, are organising the protest from 2 pm by rallying their cadres and supports from 2 pm. The protesters will assemble at Maitighar Mandala and march ahead towards the Parliament complex at New Baneshwor.

Student activists had organised a ‘warning assembly’ at Shanti Batika on Friday. Students have also been meeting top leaders of political parties and handing over memoranda to them on the impeachment motion.

Dilli Ram Subedi, vice-president of Nepal Student Union, said they met NC President Sher Bahadur Deuba and Sunday morning and handed over a memorandum. Subedi quoted Deuba as saying the party will make an institutional decision through its Central Working Committee and Parliamentary Party by taking public opinion into account.

Though the NC is yet to take a decision on the motion, NSU has been taking part in protests againsts Karki.
