Kathmandu, February 16
Student unions of three major political parties have agreed on deferring Free Student Union elections, scheduled for February 26, by five more days.
Thursday’s meeting between leaders of the ANNISU-R, student wing of the Biplav-led CPN-Maoist, and student unions of the Nepali Congress, CPN-UML and CPN-Maoist Centre — Nepal Student Union, ANNFSU and ANNISU-R — decided to defer the elections.
This came a day after top leaders of the three parties decided to conduct FSU elections on February 26.
NSU president Nain Singh Mahar, chair of the Centre-aligned ANNISU-R Narendra Neupane and chair of the Biplav Maoist-aligned Dipendra Chalaune were present at the meeting.
ANNISU-R leader Ranjit Tamang said they will inform the Tribhuvan University about the deferral of FSU elections shortly.
It should be noted that the TU had unveiled a schedule for holding FSU elections on February 26, despite opposition from the student wing of the Biplav-led Maoist party.
Meanwhile, the TU has called a meeting of student unions on Thursday afternoon. It is likely to make the new FSU election schedule public after the meeting.
