Students protest overnight for transcripts amid 9-month delay

Kathmandu, August 16

Students staged an overnight protest in front of the administrative office of the Examination Control Office (ECO) in Balkhu, demanding transcripts that have yet to be issued nine months after their results were published by Tribhuvan University.

The protest began at 6 pm on Thursday, with students spending the night at the location. They are calling for transcripts to be provided within three days of the results being published if the student is present, and within seven days if absent. They also demand an end to the mismanagement at the Examination Control Office.

Pradeep Bhandari, one of the protesters, stated, “Despite the BEd results being published nine months ago, transcripts have not been issued. Our main demand is for transcripts to be sent to the respective campuses promptly. We also seek the rectification of any errors in educational certificates without additional fees.”

Bhandari highlighted issues where students received transcripts listing results for more subjects than they had actually taken, and were subsequently charged additional fees to correct these errors.

Transcript issued promptly after protest

Among the protesters were BEd students who had been waiting for their transcripts for nine months. After the protest commenced, the chief of the Examination Control Office’s administration arranged for the transcripts to be printed and delivered within an hour.

Bhandari noted, “If the office claimed it couldn’t issue transcripts for nine months, it is surprising that they could print and deliver them so quickly once we started protesting. This indicates that prompt action is possible under pressure.”

Student Leaders express solidarity

Student leaders have shown support for the protesters. Pawan Karki, Central Vice-President of Akhil Krantikari, Secretary Upadesh Yadav, and Sanjay Chaudhary visited the protest site on Thursday evening to express solidarity. Karki discussed the issues with the staff of the administrative branch, while Secretary Yadav emphasised their full support for the students’ demands and urged Tribhuvan University officials and ECO staff to address the issues.

Prem Joshi, Chairperson of the Students’ Union at Ascol Campus, also joined the protest on Friday morning to show support for the students’ demands.

The students have indicated that their protest will continue until their demands are fully met and the mismanagement at the Examination Control Office is addressed.
