The ruling Nepal Communist Party’s spokesperson Narayan Kaji Shrestha says two chairpersons of the party should hold talks with each other to save the party from a possible split.

Shrestha’s statement follows reports which claim Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has proposed splitting the party, formed after the merger between the then CPN-UML and the CPN-Maoist Centre in 2020, owing to his differences with another chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal.

During an interview with News Agency Nepal on Monday, Shrestha said he had recently advised Dahal to resume talks with Oli so as to end the lack of communications between the two.

“We worked hard to unify the party. Now, it should not head towards a split for a non-issue. We should make efforts to save the unification,” he said quoting his suggestion to Dahal, “Hence, the chairperson should talk with another chairperson. There should be a meeting.”

Oli and Dahal had last met on Saturday. Dahal had informed leaders close to him including Shrestha about the meeting, on Sunday, revealing Oli proposed the split.
