Two Nepal-born women have found a place in the BBC’s annual list of women selected to be featured on its series examining the role of women in the 21st century.
According to the British Broadcasting Corporation, mountaineer Lhakpa Sherpa and former ‘Living Goddess’ Chanira Bajracharya have been selected for the series’ 2016 edition.
After the 2012 Delhi gang rape, BBC editor Fiona Crack and other journalists were inspired to create a series focusing on the issues and achievements of women in society . The BBC launched this series in October 2013 and programming ran over the course of the month, culminating in a conference held on 25 October.
The series covers many topics, including education, healthcare, equal pay, genital mutilation, domestic violence, and sexual abuse. In 2014, Nepal’s Darshan Karki and Jaya Luintel had also made it to the list.
The BBC says Sherpa is the first Nepali woman to climb and descend Everest successfully, and has climbed it seven times. Bajracharya, it says, created a support network to help Nepal’s former ‘living goddesses’ transition into ordinary life.
