Kathmandu, March 28

Leaders of the CPN-UML and the CPN-Maoist Centre have said the two parties will not unify before the scheduled trip of Prime Minister and UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli.

Though the two governments are yet to announce dates for the visit, Oli is likely to go to New Delhi on April 6 on a state visit.

Earlier, reports had claimed that Oli wanted to announce the unification before the trip. However, its possibility has been ruled out now, according to the leaders involved in negotiations.

The next proposed day for the announcement is April 22, the establishment day of Communist Party of Nepal, some leaders claim.

The unification process has been halted now as the Maoist Centre sought equal share at all levels, according to UML leaders, who say their party is ready to give them 40 per cent share everywhere.

On the other hand, a task force formed to finalise the interim statute and organisational structure of the party has ironed out all differences except about the unified party’s election symbol. The UML wants to retain the sun as its symbol, whereas the Maoist Centre wants to change it.

The party wants to adopt hammer and sickle as the unified party’s symbol. If the UML does not agree on it, the Maoiost Centre says a third option should be explored.
