UML may obstruct House over Bharatpur incident

CPN-UML lawmakers obstruct the House meeting.

Kathmandu, May 31

The main opposition party CPN-UML is planning to raise the incident of tearing ballot papers while vote counting was underway in Bharatpur Metropolitan City in Chitwan district in the Parliament meeting today.

The party may also resort to obstructing the Parliament meeting claiming the incident was an attack on democracy and electoral system.

The party has been claiming that ruling Nepali Congress and CPN-Maoist Centre had planned the chaos.

Some Maoist cadres had reportedly torn the ballot papers in Bharatpur on Sunday midnight, resulting in an indefinite halt in the counting.

UML Parliamentary Party Deputy Leader Subas Chandra Nembang says the House meeting might get obstructed till resumption of the counting.

“The ruling side has consulted the Attorney General and torn the ballot papers after studying gaps in the law,” he says, “We will raise this issue and might not let House proceed ahead unless the issue is settled.”

The PP meeting yesterday had discussed the party’s strategy in the House. Lawmakers have already been directed to follow what top leaders do during the meeting.
