The ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024, initially scheduled to be held in Bangladesh, has been relocated to the United Arab Emirates (UAE), according to an official announcement by the International Cricket Council (ICC).
The tournament was originally planned to take place in Bangladesh from October 3 to 20. However, due to recent student protests in Bangladesh, doubts arose regarding the feasibility of hosting the event in the country, leading to its relocation.
India was also proposed as a potential host for the Women’s T20 World Cup, but the country declined the offer.
The Women’s T20 World Cup will now be held in two cities in the UAE—Dubai and Sharjah. The ICC expressed confidence in the UAE’s readiness to host the event, citing its world-class infrastructure and facilities.
ICC Chief Executive Geoff Allardice expressed his disappointment that the World Cup could not be held in Bangladesh, stating that it was an unfortunate situation. He also extended his gratitude to the Emirates Cricket Board for stepping in as the new host.
The UAE, home to the ICC headquarters, has increasingly become a hub for international cricket tournaments. The country, in collaboration with Oman, successfully hosted the 2021 Men’s T20 World Cup and several other qualifying events. The ICC emphasised that the UAE is fully prepared to host the Women’s T20 World Cup.
The shift underscores the growing role of the UAE in global cricket, further solidifying its status as a premier destination for international tournaments.
