8 home remedies to relieve toothache

Toothaches are a common issue, but at times, the pain can become unbearable. In severe cases, it may also lead to swelling in the face or headaches. Toothache is often caused by consuming extremely hot or cold food, sticky substances, poor dental hygiene, bacterial infections, or weak tooth roots.

When immediate medical attention is not possible, certain home remedies can help alleviate the pain. Here are eight home remedies to relieve toothache advised by Dr Bipana Tamang, a BDS-certified dentist and proprietor of Stupa Dental Studio in Boudha, Kathmandu.

1. Rinsing with salt water

Mix warm water with salt and rinse your mouth to remove harmful bacteria. This method promotes oral hygiene and works as a primary treatment for toothache. It can also dislodge debris stuck in the teeth, reducing gum swelling and easing the pain.

2. Alum (Fitkari)

Alum has antibacterial and antimicrobial properties. Grind alum into a powder, apply it to the affected area for 10–15 minutes, and then rinse. Alternatively, you can dissolve alum powder in warm water and rinse your mouth to reduce bacteria and alleviate pain.

3. Clove oil

Clove oil is rich in anti-inflammatory properties, providing quick relief from toothache. Soak a cotton ball in clove oil and place it on the tooth, avoiding the gums. Keep your mouth closed for a while and rest with your head elevated to reduce pain and sensitivity.

4. Peppermint extract

Peppermint contains anti-inflammatory properties that help reduce pain and swelling. Soak peppermint leaves in hot water to extract the juice and apply it to the affected tooth to ease discomfort.

5. Asafoetida and lemon juice

Lemon juice is effective for bad breath, yellowing teeth, and toothache. Mix half a teaspoon of lemon juice with a pinch of asafoetida (hing) and apply it to the affected area. This strengthens the tooth roots and reduces pain to some extent.

6. Guava Leaves

Guava leaves help maintain oral hygiene. Boiling the leaves in water and using the solution as a mouth rinse can reduce toothache. Chewing these antibacterial-rich leaves also promotes overall dental health.

7. Aloe vera gel

Aloe vera gel is effective in reducing gum inflammation. Applying the gel to the affected tooth can alleviate swelling and provide relief from pain.

8. Black pepper

Black pepper is helpful for soothing toothache caused by consuming extremely hot or cold foods. Mix equal parts of black pepper powder and salt, add a few drops of water to form a paste, and apply it to the affected area. Let it sit for a while for immediate relief.

These natural remedies provide temporary relief and help manage toothaches when professional dental care is not immediately available. However, for persistent or severe pain, consulting a dentist is essential.
