The Parliamentary Hearing Special Committee has begun a hearing on complaints against Acting Chief Justice Sushila Karki. The committee summoned complainants on Sunday morning to discuss the matter.
One of the complaints claims that Acting CJ Karki happens to be kin of Lokman Singh Karki, Chief Commissioner, Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority. According to a source, the complainant claims Acting CJ Karki cannot handle a case against CIAA Chief Commissioner Karki because the two are kin.
The identity of the complainant remains a mystery, though governing legal provisions do not allow filing of complaints without disclosing the complainants’ identity.
On the other hand, Acting CJ Karki has been stating that she has no familial relations with CIAA chief Karki.
Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba had said in public that the Supreme Court had delayed hearing on the appointment of justices. The Supreme Court had issued a press release objecting to the statement, triggering a counterstatement from the Nepal Bar Association.
Acting CJ Karki had said political leaders should not undermine the jurisdiction of the Supreme Court. At that time, she said the apex court does not schedule a hearing by responding to requests coming from political leaders.
Another complaint relates to DNA testing, according to the source.
Some complainants, however, did not appear at Sunday’s meeting, despite the PHSC’s summonses, the source told Onlinekhabar.
After holding discussions with the complainants, the PHSC postponed the meeting for an hour and invited Acting CJ Karki for further discussions with her.
The PHSC has not invited media at its meeting this time. Notably, the committee had invited the media at a discussion over recommendation of eight justices. The committee has unanimously approved the name of Ayodhi Prasad Yadav as Chief Election Commissioner.
The committee will conduct hearing on Ambassadors after a hearing on Acting Chief Justice Karki.
