Khajura, May 24
Two girls died after drowning in the Rapti river in Banke.
They breathed their last at Sidhaniyaghat at Duduwa rural municipality-4 on Tuesday evening. The deceased have been identified as Sharada Chaudhary and Sarita Chaudhary.
A group of six persons, including the two girls, had reached the riverbank for picnic purposes, said a spokesperson of the District Police Office, Banke, DSP Ram Prasad Gharti Magar. The two then drowned while swimming in the river.
Magar said investigations are ongoing.
Of late, children drowning has become a regular affair in Nepal due to the lack of safety measures, insufficient recognition of the problem, and children’s inability to swim among other reasons.
